Here are some notes that I made after Shimokawa Senseis visit:
There are three vectors that must be used simultaneously when
executing technique.
1. gravity-- lower hips by bending one or both knees.
2. rotation of the body around the central axis. This action
starts in the hips.
3. direction of movement in relation to your partner.
You can use this as a self check by making sure all these vector
come into play when executing technique.
For these to work your body must remain unified. Stay in one
piece. See notes on basic hanmi stance and the five point check.
Shimokawa Sensei also clearly demonstrated the sequence of
neutralize, enter, strike down. At one point he told me "cut down
as the person is already falling or off balance."
Notes from our visit to The Aikido Ohana:
In a training encounter it is Nage's job to end it as quickly and
efficiently as possible. It is Uke's job to survive and continue
for as long as possible. Uke is trying to perpetuate the situation
and Nage is trying to end it.
This type of training builds awareness, resilience, maai, timing,
and a more complete understanding of the person and the technique.
