Welcome to Kohala
Aikikai's home on the web. We are an Aikido Dojo affiliated with
Aikikai Hombu Dojo in Tokyo. We are located in the beautiful town of
Kapa'au, in the North Kohala district of the Big Island of Hawaii.
Our Dojo is dedicated to fostering peaceful relationships in the
world. We endeavor to do this by promoting a balance of martial
spirit and compassionate action within each individual.
Our Dojo welcomes all visitors who desire sincere training in
Aikido.
Announcements:
There will be no regularly scheduled classes
from December 20 through January 3. Our regular class schedule will
resume on Monday, January 4, 2010.
The traditional Year-End Dojo Clean-up will be
on Sunday, December 27 at 1:00pm. Please make an effort to come and
support your dojo in this endeavor; this not only allows us to show
our appreciation for our practice, but also expresses our gratitude
to the Shingon Mission for their generosity in allowing us to
practice in such a beautiful, special place. Many people from
Hawaii and around the world have told us what a beautiful dojo we
have. Let's take care of it.
Practice your way into the New Year at our
special New Year's Eve Class, which starts at 11:30pm on December
31. This class is designed as a misogi (purification) practice. We
do 108 repetitions of a technique, which represents the Buddhist
concept of the 108 vices that we would like to clear from our lives,
thus starting the year on a positive note.
On January 2, 2010, we will have our annual
mochi-tsuki (mochi pounding). We will start at 9:00am, at the
dojo. This is a traditional Japanese activity representing
abundance, long life, and togetherness. Everyone is welcome to
attend.
We will hold our annual ceremonial opening of
the dojo on Sunday, January 3, at 3:00pm. This will be followed by
snacks and refreshments. Again, everyone is welcome to attend.
On Tuesday, January 5, 2010, we will be
starting a new beginner's session, at the usual time (5:30pm); this
session will continue every Tuesday and Thursday until March 30,
2010. If you or anyone you know would like to start aikido
practice, this would be an excellent time to begin.
Please remember that on February 12-15, 2010, the
great-grandson of O Sensei (the founder of aikido), Mitsuteru
Ueshiba, will be instructing at Aikido of Hilo's Winter Camp; early
registration is encouraged because of the large number of people
expected to attend.
